About the speaker --
Shaykh Nuh Keller read philosophy and classical arabic at the University of Chicago and UCLA, and became Muslim in Cairo in 1977. He studied Shafi'I and Hanafi jurisprudence, hadith, and other subjects with traditional scholars in the Arab world, producing a number of translations and works in Islamic law and mysticism, including "Reliance of the Traveller" and Imam Nawawi's 'al-Maqasid.' He took the Shadhili tariqa in 1982 in Damascus from Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Shagouri, who authorized him as a shaykh of the path in 1996.
His spiritual lineage returns to the Prophet (pbuh) through 'Abdal-Qadir Jilani, Junayd, Abul Hasan al-Shadhili, and others. He has spoken on Islam and Sufism at Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, UCLA, and other institutions around the world. He writes and teaches in Amman, where he has lived with his wife for more than two decades. Many of his articles and lectures are available.
