Dr. Sulayman Nyang begins by contextualizing the issue of Islam in Spain by discussing the Umayyid rule, its downfall, and its resurrection in Spain. He then briefly outlines the events leading up to the Muslim rule in Spain, the atmosphere created by it, and the main reason for its decline. Throughout this extensive presentation, the speaker makes observations that show how the development, growth, and contribution of Muslim Spain is not much different from modern America and its presence and influence on the world scene. And this comparison allows for a better understanding of the profound history of the Muslim civilization in the West, especially among non-Muslims. Dr. Nyang concludes by analyzing the transformation of the Muslim culture into Spain, namely the lifestyle of the people, architecture, business dealings, and knowledge.
"You have Christians who were Arabized- they dressed like Arabs, many of them learned Arabic because that was the 'in-thing' to be. It was nice to be an Arab in those days."
"You don't understand why North Africa became Muslim and Arab, and Spain after 700 years reverted to Christianity- because the histories are different. In North Africa the Arabs intermarried with the Berbers just like they did in Spain, but the difference is in North Africa the whole piece of real estate was under Arab-Muslim control, whereas in Spain there was still land left for the Christian Spaniards to maintain their culture and tradition."
"The whole idea of banking came out of the Arab civilization... The concept of a check grew out of the Islamic civilization because the Islamic civilization was built on the notion of trust."
"This is what happened to the Europeans. They had to come to learn about the Greeks from the Muslims, because the Muslims were the custodian of Greek knowledge!"
